The 3 basic components for a web presence:
|
| |
1. Your domain name: This represents the "mail box" in front of your house. The common mistake with domain names is simply called "vanity". Here is an example, which of the following domain names do you think works best? johnhortoninc.com or floridawelldrilling.com? Of course the second one will help the search engines determine what your web presence is about (and whenever possible, always use a .com as the majority of people remember .com before they remember .net, or .org). By not following this, someone else may have floridawelldrilling.com and all your efforts may send them traffic if you settle for floridawelldrilling.net

2. Your hosting: This represents the "property" that your "mail box" above is located on. This can be a very tough decision as there is much to consider like: What language (or combination of) will you be creating your web presence in? (html, php, asp, cc+ etc...) What features will you require like: databases, special scripts, special interactive features? (forms, calendars, e-commerce, forums, newsletters etc...) Also important, what level of support will you need or expect? Most hosting now is very affordable, so price should not be a primary concern ($9.95 per month to $29 per month... any more and you are wasting money).
Next consideration is security, you have to protect any client info you plan to gather.

3. Your website: This represents the "house" or actual display that sits on your "property" above, right behind your "mail box" up in #1. The best way to start this process is to grab a blank sheet of paper and start building a chart of pages that you think your visitors will require to make the decision to do business with you... A. home page, this should be brief and give your visitors a good sense of what you do and who you are (like how long have you been in business, etc...) and how to contact you with a real address.
